Starting the 2013 SMU Sailing Regatta calendar is the well known Royal Langkawi International Regatta. Competition this year went up a notch as team SMU were up against 4 other teams in the one design Platu class. The Malaysian Navy, the youth team from Royal Selangor Yacht Club and team SMU Sailing put up a fierce flight to the finish line with the teams scoring at least two first place finish out of ten scheduled race
The first day of racing saw light breeze of up to 5 knots. In spite of the light conditions and the added weight of an extra crew member, we came in a respectable fourth position and built a strong desire to improve through the regatta. The 2nd race day conditions were similar the light conditions in a day 1 and conditions only improved in day 3 where the winds picked up with gusts of up to 8 knots. In the stronger winds, the lighter boats of our competitors began to get overpowered and this gave us an advantage which we took and won the fifth race and placed second on the sixth race
The regatta ended with a bang for us as we won the final race which the race committee set as a passage race. Off the water, the good cheer and fun loving spirit of SMU sailing never fades as we entertained ourselves and our new friends from Australia who sailed in the Platu class. The endless drinking and merry making continues right off the water and through the nights festivities and sumptuous buffet spread planned by the awesome team at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club led by Zailani also affectionately known as Zack. We would also like to thank the race committee for a wonderful race and the administration staff at RLYC for inviting us.
